Tally the Time Cards for Payroll
If your team still clocks in on paper time cards, you do not need new hardware to add them up. Photograph the cards at the end of the pay period and have your muse read the hours, check the math, and hand you clean totals to enter into payroll.
What it does
You take a photo of each time card with your phone. Your muse reads the handwriting on the cards, pulls out the start and end times for each day, adds the hours, and produces a total per employee plus the combined payroll total. One small business owner uses it exactly this way and cuts about fifteen minutes of adding off every payroll run. It also flags cards that look wrong, like a day with a start time but no end time, so you catch mistakes before they turn into short paychecks.
How to use it
- Gather the time cards for the pay period and lay each one flat in good light.
- Photograph every card and send the photos to your muse in one message.
- Ask it to read the start and end times for each day, add up the hours per employee, and show the totals plus any cards with missing or unclear entries.
- Scan the totals against what you already know, like who worked Saturday, then enter the numbers into your payroll tool yourself.
What you need
- Paper or card-based timekeeping. If you already use a digital time clock, you do not need this.
- Clear photos: flat cards, readable handwriting, no shadows over the numbers.
- Your payroll tool or spreadsheet, where the final totals go.
What to watch for
Handwriting is the weak point. Faded ink, crossed-out times, and cramped boxes can be misread, so scan the muse's totals for anything that looks wrong, especially hour counts that are much higher or lower than usual. Tell it your rules up front: whether you round to the quarter hour, whether overtime starts at forty hours, whether meal breaks come out. The muse prepares the numbers and you approve the paychecks. Employee names appear in the photos, so only share the cards with your own muse and keep the totals where you normally keep payroll records.
