Set Up a Nightly Audit That Only Reports and Never Acts

確認済み 2026-10-23

A muse can run a check every night on one recurring mess, such as a Downloads folder, receipts in your email, or old bookmarks, and leave a capped morning report. The audit only looks. It never moves, deletes, or sends anything. You decide what to do with what it finds.

What it does

You give the audit four things: scope, rules, report shape, and an approval line. Scope names exactly what it looks at, for example Downloads files older than 30 days. Rules say what counts as clutter, what to flag, and what to ignore. The report shape caps the list, for example 15 items, largest first, with a one-line total. The approval line states the audit is read-only. A quiet night still gets a one-line nothing-to-report, so you know it ran.

How to use it

  1. Pick one mess to start with, the one that bothers you most. Downloads is a good first choice.
  2. Write the audit in plain words: "Every night at 2:00am, list files in my Downloads folder older than 30 days, largest first, capped at 15 items. Ignore anything with setup or installer in the name. Report the list and a one-line total of the space they take. Read only: never move, rename, or delete anything."
  3. Read every report for the first week. Correct it in the thread when it flags something you keep on purpose.
  4. Add a second audit only after the first stays short and accurate. Good next choices are a nightly sweep of that day's email receipts, flagged over a set amount or looking like duplicates, and a weekly review of bookmark folders not opened in 90 days.
  5. Once a month, retire an audit whose reports you have stopped opening.

What you need

  • A muse account
  • File access for a folder audit, or an email connection for a receipt sweep
  • A few minutes each morning for the first week

What to watch for

  • Reports grow if you do not cap them. A 40-row list gets skimmed and then ignored. Keep the cap from day one.
  • Keep each audit in its own thread. A combined report buries the second section under the first.
  • If an audit finds a likely duplicate charge, it should ask you what to do and draft the next step for your approval. It should never dispute a charge by itself.
  • It is normal if a nightly check sounds strange at first. You wrote the scope, it is read-only, and you can pause or remove it at any time.
