Run Your Home Server Through Your Muse with Tailscale
A muse can join its cloud computer to your home network through Tailscale and work on a home server you own, running commands and browser tasks on your own hardware through a locked-down account you control.
What it does
A muse normally works on a cloud computer, far from the machines in your house. Tailscale links devices into one small private network only you can see, with no open ports facing the internet. The muse can set up that link from its side: join its cloud computer to your network, create a login key pair, and connect to your home server through a dedicated account with limited rights. From there it can do real work on your own hardware: check on storage drives, manage file services, pull code projects, and run browser tasks from your home connection. You keep the keys, the limited account, and the off switch.
How to use it
- Install Tailscale on your home server and make sure the server shows up in your device list.
- Create a separate user account on the server for the muse, without full administrator rights. This limited account is the safety rail.
- Ask the muse: "Do you have a Tailscale skill? Join your computer to my private network and set up a connection to my home server."
- Do the steps only you can do when it asks, such as approving the new device on your network.
- Start small: ask it to report disk space and list what is running, and read the report before you hand it anything bigger.
What you need
- A muse account
- A home server or spare computer that stays on, running a common system such as Ubuntu
- A Tailscale account, which has a free tier for home use
- A separate limited user account on the server for the muse
What to watch for
It is normal if giving an agent a path into your home network sounds strange. The controls are what make it reasonable: a private network with no open ports, a limited account that cannot change system settings, and keys you can remove at any time. Start with read-only jobs, such as reports and checks, and grant write access task by task. Never give the muse your own login or an account with full administrator rights. If a job needs higher rights, do that step yourself, or skip the job. Not every home service will connect cleanly on the first try, so test each new one on its own.
