Reconcile Your Ad Tracking When the Numbers Do Not Match

Verified 2026-10-22

When your ad platform, your website tracker, and your sales reports each tell a different story about the same ads, a muse can line the three up side by side, find where the counts broke, and fix the tracking so the numbers agree again.

What it does

Most small advertisers look at one screen and trust it. The trouble starts when the ad platform says one number of sales, the tracker on the website says another, and the analytics report says a third. Somewhere in that gap, money leaks: ads that died weeks ago keep spending, and sales get counted twice, so a weak ad looks strong. A muse with access to all three can compare them line by line and work out which one is wrong and why. A single check can find dead ads still running weeks later, a signup event that stopped recording after a website update, and sales counted twice. Each one is fixable once it is found: pause the dead ads, restore the event, and remove the double counts.

How to use it

  1. Connect your ad account, your website tracker, and your analytics, or export a report from each one for the same dates.
  2. Ask one plain question: "Do these three agree on what my ads spent and what they sold? Show me every place they do not match."
  3. Read the mismatch list first. Dead ads, double-counted sales, and events that stopped recording are the usual finds.
  4. Approve each fix one at a time: pause the dead ads, restore the missing event, remove the double counts.
  5. Ask for the same check again next month. Tracking breaks quietly after website updates, so once is not enough.

What you need

  • A muse account
  • Access to your ad account, such as Meta Ads
  • Access to your website tracker and your analytics for the same period
  • Time to approve fixes before anything is paused or changed

What to watch for

  • A mismatch does not always mean one side is wrong. Different tools count a sale at different moments, so small gaps are normal, and the muse should explain each gap before calling it an error.
  • Never let it pause an ad or change tracking on the first pass. Read the list, check one or two entries against a real order, and only then approve the fix.
  • Keep the before and after reports. If the numbers move later, those reports show what changed and when.
  • The muse finds where the counts broke, you decide what gets fixed.
