Keep a Local Events Calendar That Updates Itself

Verified 2026-10-06

Your city already publishes what is happening near you. Many towns post event permits and public event listings in open databases, and a muse can pull the ones for your neighborhood into a separate calendar that keeps itself fresh month after month.

What it does

Instead of hearing about the street fair the day after it happened, you get a living calendar of what is coming to your area. You tell the muse which neighborhood or location you care about, and it searches the public event-permit database and other open event sources for everything scheduled there. It puts the results on their own calendar, separate from your personal one, so your schedule stays clean and the local happenings have a home of their own. Once the calendar is built, the muse can check back on a schedule you set, once a month for example, and add anything new that shows up.

How to use it

  1. Tell the muse the neighborhood or area you want to follow, and ask it to pull upcoming events from the public event-permit or event-listing sources for that area.
  2. Have it create a new, separate calendar just for local events, not mixed in with your personal appointments.
  3. Ask it to check the sources again on a schedule, monthly is plenty, and add new events without asking each time.
  4. When an event catches your eye, have the muse pull up the details: exact location, time, and anything you need to bring or register for.

What you need

  • A calendar the muse can write to
  • The name of the area you want to follow

What to watch for

Public databases can be spotty. Some events get permitted late, some get cancelled without updates, and small neighborhood events may never appear in the official listings. Treat the calendar as a heads-up list, not a promise: confirm the details with the venue or organizer before you plan around them. If your town does not publish permit data, ask the muse to use public event listings instead; the approach is the same.
