Identify a Place from a Photo and Check It Before You Go

Verified 2026-11-01

Your muse can look at a photo you took, use the location saved with it, and name the place in the picture, then pull up that place's hours, rating, and reviews so you can check it before you go.

What it does

Most people have a camera roll full of places they cannot name: a cafe from a trip, a shop a friend took them to, a trailhead from last summer. When a photo carries its location, your muse can match that frame against known places and return ranked candidates, each with a name and confidence level. Pick the right one and it can read the record for that exact place: address, categories, opening hours, whether it is open or closed, rating and how many people rated it, price level, phone number, and links, plus photos and review quotes chosen for what you care about. The name, address, and map point always come from the same record, so the place you read about is the place you would visit.

How to use it

  1. Find the photo in your camera roll and share it with your muse, keeping its location data attached.
  2. Ask: "What place is this?" and read the ranked candidates it returns.
  3. Confirm the candidate that matches what you remember. If none fits, say so rather than picking the closest name.
  4. Ask for the details that matter for your visit: hours today, rating, price level, and a few review quotes about what you care about.
  5. Call ahead or check the place's own link for anything that must be exact, such as a holiday schedule.

What you need

  • A muse account
  • A photo that carries location data, which most phone cameras save unless location was turned off
  • Enough memory of the visit to confirm or reject the candidates

What to watch for

  • A photo without location data cannot be matched this way. Your muse can only work from what is visible in the picture, and a name would be a guess.
  • Ranked candidates are matches, not proof. A busy street can hold several places at nearly the same spot, so confirm the name against your own memory before you act on the hours or reviews.
  • A missing rating or missing hours means the record does not have them, not that the place is poor or shut. Treat gaps as unknown.
  • This check does not give directions or travel times. Use a maps tool for the route once you know the place is worth the trip.
