Get Busy Mailing Lists and Forums Read for You

If you follow busy mailing lists or forums, your muse can read the whole flow for you and hand back only the substance, with off-topic posts, arguments, and group promotion filtered out.

What it does

Mailing lists and forums reward people who read everything, and most people cannot. One week of active lists can run to hundreds of messages across dozens of threads, and the useful parts sit buried between side arguments and repeat posts. A muse can take that reading on. It works through the messages, groups them by thread and topic, and reports the points that matter: questions answered, products and apps people discussed and what they thought of them, and decisions or news buried mid-thread. You can dig deeper into any item, follow a link back to the original, and dictate a reply for the muse to post after you approve the exact words. You never have to fight the list interface or the forum pages to stay current.

How to use it

1. Connect the email account that receives your lists, or point the muse at the forums you follow.
2. Name the lists and the filter in plain words: "Read this week's messages, skip off-topic posts, arguments, and posts promoting another group."
3. Ask for the shape you want back: threads grouped by topic, a short summary for each, and links to the originals.
4. Correct the filter once and it holds. If summaries include a kind of post you do not care about, say so and later digests leave it out.
5. When you want to reply, dictate your points, read the draft the muse writes from them, and approve the exact text before it posts anything.

What to watch for

• Start with one list you know well, so you can judge whether the summaries keep what you would have kept.
• A summary is a compression. For a technical answer you plan to act on, open the original message and read the full thread first.
• Keep the approval rule firm: nothing gets posted under your name until you have seen the exact text.
• It is normal if handing a machine your reading feels strange at first. You choose the lists, you can review what it remembers, and you can disconnect the inbox at any time. The muse prepares, you decide.
