Find the Cheapest Gas Along Your Route and Work Out the Fuel Cost

Verified 2026-10-29

Before a drive, a muse can look along the route you are about to take, find the cheapest gas stations on the way, and work out what the fuel for the whole trip is likely to cost.

What it does

Gas prices can differ a lot between stations only a few miles apart, and the cheapest station in town is no use if it sits twenty minutes in the wrong direction. You give the muse your start, your destination, and the car you drive. It checks prices at stations along that route, picks out the cheapest stops that do not add a long detour, and does the fuel math for the trip: the distance, roughly how much fuel a car like yours uses over that distance, and what filling up at the price it found should cost. The same check works for a daily commute or a one-off long drive, and you can ask again before the next trip so the prices are fresh.

How to use it

  1. Say the trip in one message: where you start, where you are going, and when you plan to leave.
  2. Name your car and how much fuel it uses, if you know it, or let the muse work from the car's usual figures.
  3. Set your detour limit in plain words: "Only stations within five minutes of the route," so a small saving never turns into a long side trip.
  4. Ask for the full picture back: the cheapest station, its price, the fuel the trip needs, and the expected total cost.
  5. Check the price at the pump when you arrive. If it has moved, tell the muse, so the next estimate starts from a better number.

What you need

  • A muse account
  • A start point, a destination, and a rough leaving time
  • Your car type, and its fuel use if you know it

What to watch for

  • Prices move during the day, and the price the muse finds is the latest one it can see, not a promise about the pump. Confirm at the station.
  • A cheaper price far off the route can cost more in fuel and time than it saves. Keep the detour limit in the request every time.
  • Fuel use figures are estimates. A loaded car, winter weather, and heavy traffic all push real use up, so treat the trip total as a planning number, not an exact bill.
  • The muse works out the route and the cost, you decide where to stop.
