Cut the Dead Time Out of a Long Game Recording

Verified 2026-10-20

If you record your matches, a muse can edit a long game recording down to the action, cutting out the pauses between points so the video you watch and share is the play itself, not the waiting around.

What it does

A full match recording is mostly dead time: walking back into position, toweling off, getting a drink, waiting to serve. Watching it back means scrubbing through all of that to find the points. Hand the recording to a muse and it works through the whole video, finds where play stops and starts again, and cuts the in-between parts out. A long match recording can be edited this way, leaving the points back to back with the breaks removed. You end up with a shorter video that is worth rewatching for practice and simple to share, without sitting in an editing program and making every cut by hand.

How to use it

  1. Record the match the way you normally do and send the video file to your muse.
  2. Say what counts as action in your sport: "Keep every point from the serve to the end of the rally. Cut everything between points."
  3. Name anything you want kept even if it looks like a pause, such as a team talk, a dispute, or a changeover you want to review.
  4. Watch the edited version start to finish once. Check the first few cuts closely, because that is where a too tight cut shows up.
  5. Ask for fixes in plain words: "Leave a second before each serve" or "Put back the break before the last game," and let it re-cut.

What you need

  • A recording of the game or match, long enough that the pauses are the problem
  • A clear rule in your own words for what is action and what is dead time
  • Time to watch the result once before you rely on it or share it

What to watch for

  • A muse is a general editor, not a specialist sports app. Dedicated tools for some sports can track the score and judge balls in or out, and the muse does not match that yet. Use it for the cut, not for calls.
  • Edges are the risk: a cut placed a moment early can clip the start of a serve or the end of a rally, which is why the first watch matters.
  • If the recording matters and cannot be filmed again, keep the original file untouched and work only on the edited copy.
