Count a Huge Archive Without Starting Over

A muse can work through a very large archive in pages, save its place to a file as it goes, and pick up where it stopped after a restart, so a count of tens of thousands of items can finish instead of failing near the end.

What it does

Big archives break simple requests. Ask for a count of years of stories, posts, or files and a single pass may time out or restart from zero. The fix is a checkpoint rule: the muse works in pages, writes down the position it has reached every set number of pages, and reads that saved position first if the job restarts. Using that method, an archive of tens of thousands of items can be counted in full. The same checkpoint habit works for any long, boring count or scan where starting over would waste the whole run.

How to use it

1. Connect the account that holds the archive, with read-only access.
2. State the job and the checkpoint rule together: count every item, save your place to a file every 10 pages, and resume from the saved place if you restart.
3. Ask for progress reports at set points, such as every 10,000 items, so you can see the job is moving.
4. When the count finishes, ask for the total and the date range it covered.
5. Spot check the total against a number the app itself shows, if one exists.

What to watch for
