Clean Up Duplicate Transactions After a Card Replacement
When a bank replaces your card, a budgeting app can import the same purchases twice and quietly wreck your spending totals. Your muse can go through the transactions in a budgeting app such as Monarch, work out which entries are true duplicates from the card changeover, and clean them up so the numbers add up again.
What it does
The problem usually starts when an old card and its replacement overlap: the bank reports the same purchase under both card numbers, and the app counts it twice. The muse compares transactions by date, amount, and merchant, and sorts out which pairs are the same purchase reported twice and which only look alike, such as two genuine trips to the same shop for the same amount. It shows you the list it believes are duplicates before anything is removed, with the reason for each one. After you approve, it deletes or merges the extra copies in the app and rechecks the totals for the affected accounts and categories, so a grocery budget or a monthly spend figure stops showing money you never spent twice.
How to use it
- Note the date your card was replaced and the date the new card started being used.
- Say: "Since my card was replaced, my budgeting app has duplicate transactions. Find the ones that are the same purchase reported twice."
- Review the list it brings back. Check a few entries against your bank statement, especially any pair where you might really have bought the same thing twice.
- Approve the cleanup only for the pairs you are satisfied are true duplicates.
- Ask it to confirm the new totals for the month, and compare one category total against your statement yourself.
What you need
- A muse account
- A budgeting app the muse can access, with the affected account connected
- The rough date of the card replacement
- Your bank statement, for spot checks
What to watch for
- Two identical amounts at the same shop on the same day can be real. Subscriptions, top-ups, and split bills all produce look-alike entries that are not duplicates.
- Nothing should be deleted before you have seen the list. The muse prepares the cleanup, you decide, and only then does anything change.
- Duplicates can creep back if the old card stays connected in the app. Once the cleanup is done, check whether the old card still needs to be linked at all.
