Build a Co-Parenting Expense Watchdog That Checks Every Receipt

確認済み 2026-10-24

Parents who share kids' costs can have a muse watch the expense emails, check each charge against its receipt, log who paid and what each share is in a shared worksheet, and flag anything that does not match before any money moves.

What it does

Shared expenses between two households run on trust and a pile of forwarded emails. The watchdog gives that pile a system. It watches for emails about the children's expenses, checks each charge against its receipt, and holds any item that arrives without one, asking for the receipt instead of logging it as owed. Every accepted item goes into a shared worksheet with the total, which child it is for, the date, who paid, and each share. If a payment is not scheduled as the deadline gets close, the muse sends a reminder. It pays nothing itself. A charge that jumps from the month before gets flagged the same way.

How to use it

  1. Agree the ground rules with the other parent first: what counts as shared, the split, the payment window, and that a receipt is required. The muse enforces rules, it does not invent them.
  2. Set up the shared worksheet with columns for total, child, date, who paid, and each share.
  3. Connect the email account where expense messages land, read-only at first, and show the muse two or three past examples so it learns a normal claim.
  4. State the checks in plain words: "No receipt, no log entry. Ask for the receipt and hold the item. Flag any charge much higher than the last one for the same thing."
  5. Review the log weekly for the first month. You pay each item yourself once you have checked it.

What you need

  • A muse account with email access you both understand and accept
  • A shared worksheet you can both see
  • Written ground rules both parents agreed to before the first check runs

What to watch for

  • It is normal if handing an agent a view into family expenses sounds strange. Start read-only, review every early entry yourself, and widen access only when the record is clean.
  • The watchdog is only as fair as the rules you gave it. If the split changes for one kind of cost, say a medical bill, write that exception where the muse can read it.
  • A flagged price rise is a question, not an accusation. Prices do go up. The flag exists so a person looks before paying.
  • Keep payment manual. The muse prepares the record, you decide and you pay.
